Citizenship certificate is in!
« on: August 04, 2004, 03:33:27 PM »
Just got a call from the Consulate, and they have my citizenship certificate!

For those who were curious about this, I do have to go in for a citizenship ceremony to get the certificate.  It's easy for me, as I can get the Metro from work to the Consulate in DC at lunchtime.  I don't know what they do for those not near a Consulate.

They set up the ceremonies in local areas depending upon where you live.  I know there's already been one ceremony here in the Medway area - can't wait until it's my turn!

Congratulations!

Sorry about this but Ive missed your whole story. Mind refreshing? Im applying for British Nationality soon so if thats what youve just applied for any words of advice or a run down of your story would be helpfull. And mind if I ask why your certificate is at the counculate in DC? Have you moved back to the US?

I live in the US.  My girlfriend and I plan to move to the UK, but not until next year.  I just registered as a citizen on the basis of my mother being a British citizen by birth.

YES!!!!  Congratulations on getting through the process!  :-*

Not to be a whinger, but along with being happy to offer congratulations to all of you foreign-born children of British women who are able to become citizens, whenever and wherever I find you, I always shed a little tear for myself at not being born at the right time!  And feel a little bit of frustration with the British government... :-[

Yesterday I went in to the Consulate in DC to go through my citizenship ceremony.  Basically, I just went into this guy's office, where he went over the document I was getting, and I had to read a one sentence statement to the effect that I swore my allegience to QEII and her heirs and successors "in accordance with the law."  And that was that.  I'm now a citizen.  The guy also gave me some helpful advice about my passport application, even giving me a certified copy of my citizenship certificate so that I could submit that rather than the original for my passport application.

And today I received my UK passport.  I mailed the application in on 21 August and got it back on 2 September.  That was under 2 weeks--much faster than I had hoped for!

Now I get to try it out for on visit (to the UK) in October.

I just hope that, when the time comes, my gf's partner visa process goes as smoothly.
