Anyone have experience with TASIS, ASL or ACS?
« on: May 19, 2011, 01:16:52 PM »
We're preparing to move to London in August and are trying to sort out the school situation for our 2 oldest children.  We want them to go to an American school and I see there are a few different options.  Obviously, we'll have to see which ones have space available, etc. but I was wondering if anyone on the forum had personal experience with any of these schools that they'd be willing to share.
We plan to visit schools when we are there house hunting in July but of course they will not be in session at that time so we won't get to see them "in action".
Any information you could share regarding these schools would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Jenny

One of our forum members, Onetiger, teaches at one of those schools. I can't recall which one but if she doesnt' post here, I'd PM her and ask her about them.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I work at the American School in London. Have you spoken to anyone in our admissions yet to see if there is any space?  We tend to be VERY over subscribed, though sometimes openings come up.

There are a lot of positives about the school and most families LOVE being there.  Obviously there are negatives like any school.  The big positive is that it is a huge community: parents are encouraged to take part in the school in many different ways and there are some wonderful programs for the students.  The school is quite competitive and can be tough for an average student.  We have the best SLD program I've ever worked with and a great counselling team (I'm one of them, so I'm a bit prejudiced).  We have things for sporty kids, musicians, actors, etc.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to pm me.

I am a teacher at ACS (am in my 6th year teaching there) and think it is a great school!  We have wonderful resources, small class-sizes, great teachers, a beautiful campus and happy students and families.  All three of the schools you list are very good schools.  One factor in your decision may be where you would prefer to live - in central London (closer to ASL) or out in the "suburbs" (closer to ACS and TASIS)?  I am happy to answer any questions you may have, if you want to send me a message.  Good luck!

Thank you so much for the replies.  I'm in the process of filling out applications now so we'll see how things shake out.
I've sent emails to all the admissions depts to try to gauge space available etc.  Based on website info it seems ASL might be out b/c they are no longer taking applications for K1.  I want both my kids at the same school so that probably won't work.

As much as I would prefer to live in central London it is looking more likely that we will end up in the suburbs.  My husband will be working in Reading so between his need to commute and our desire to have our kids in an American school it seems the suburbs are probably our best alternative.

Thanks again for the information.
Cheers,
Jenny
