Considering Moving from New York to London
« on: July 06, 2011, 09:38:12 AM »
Hello everyone :) My name is Ayelet, I was born and raised in NYC and have lived here my whole life. That's me in the picture, I always get told I look really young but I'm 29, and I work in Investment Banking. (I still have no idea how I kept my job after the economy crashed.)

I actually have an undergrad in finance, went to law school and then became a corporate lawyer. I enjoyed but the work I do now is more challenging and I think more creative and hands on. Anyway, the reason I'm considering moving to London is because my fiance is from England and we're sort of having this great debate over which one of us should make the move "across the pond" as he says.

We are currently leaning towards me making the move because to be honest I work sometimes 100 hours a week and not to bring up the biological clock but I do feel mine ticking and I would like to finally marry my semi-permanent fiance and live with him and (maybe) start a family. I have visited England but living somewhere is a lot different than visiting so I am really excited to go through the forums and read about the experiences fellow Americans have had with moving to and living in the UK.

By all accounts, it's easier to go US>UK than UK>US, though both countries are pretty miserable to legal immigrants.

Anyway, welcome to the forum. It's an invaluable resource.

I'm also from NYC.

You'll love London.  It has everything New York has, plus Europe is next door.

Plus the spousal visa to permanent resident transition is much more straightforward in the UK.

But, only you (and your man) can make the decision.

Welcome to the forums!  From what I've read on here from others going through the spousal/fiancee visa process, it's a long and expensive process, but I would imagine worth it in the long run! :) Good luck!

London is cool. I am from NYC too. From Spring and West B'Way, and then 2nd and C.
Now I live in Worthing.
I am a native New Yorker. Manhattan.
England is waaaaaaay different, but it is a great country.
Welcome!
β€œIt was when I realised I had a new nationality: I was in exile. I am an adulterous resident: when I am in one city, I am dreaming of the other. I am an exile; citizen of the country of longing.” ― Suketu Mehta.

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.
