Topic: For those who have gotten married in the registry office...  (Read 4045 times)

I have a few questions about registry office weddings.

1.  Were you permitted to use music?

2.  Were you permitted to write your own vows?

3.  Is there a time limit for the ceremony or can you "rent" it for say, 30 minutes?

4.  Has anyone gotten married in Pontefract (West Yorkshire) registry office?

The Leeds city council has a good description about what goes on in a registry wedding. Check the links on the bottom and side as well. The answers to questions one and two are yes, btw. :)

These things tend to be pretty standard across the board. The simple ceremony takes 15 minutes, and you get 30 if you book one of the bigger ceremony rooms.

Also, if either of you are subject to immigration control you'll need to give notice at a designated office. The closest to Pontefract would be Leeds.

I knew I had to give notice, but I thought I just had to go to Pontefract for that. Good to know now that we will have to go to Leeds to do so. (I really like Leeds so we'll make a day trip of it.)

I was just thinking, the giving notice thing may be different if you're here on a marriage visitors or fiance visa. Someone will come around and clear this up I'm sure. :)

The ceremony choices are actually alot nicer than I expected, to be honest.  I just envision your typical City Hall wedding where its "I do." "I do." "Sign this." "You are married."  But it wasn't like that at all.

I would still suggest you call your local Registry office where your wedding will be located.  Once you let them know you are here on a Visa, they will let you know where to give Notice, along with the phone number to call.  The local Registrar office should not only walk you through the info you will need, but you can still set up your date in advance.  Its called a Provisional Booking. (This comes in REALLY handy if you don't have your fiance visa yet. or need further proof a wedding is actually happening.)

Then you will need to call and make an appointment with the office to give Notification.  Both you and your fiance go together.  You are interviewed together and then one on one. Don't worry, its basic information about you and your fiance.  Its not an interrogation.

Once its done, there will be a Notification of your Intent to marry at that office for 15 days.  Once this is done you can go pick up your certificate and take it to your local Registrar where you are having your wedding.

Your Registrar will also be supplying you with choices for your wedding.  You should be able to supply them with "music" to play - usually at the beginning and end, but they do not stop and start it for you to come in at a specific song, or point in the song.  You will most likely be able to choose if you want readings and you will be able to choose if you want standard vows, or write your own.

I'm babbling at this point but I do have to say, Our Registrar wedding was as lovely and laid back as we wanted it.  It took me longer to get ready to walk down the hallway at the Registrar's office than it did to actually get married! 7 minutes and I was a Mrs. LOL.  But it was terrific.

You can choose your own music but it mustn't have any religious references - the same goes for any readings used at a Civil Ceremony.  THey can usually supply you with a list of popular songs/readings that are/aren't allowed.

Thank you. Yes, I did read that. Neither of us are religious, but I guess I need to be aware of any "spiritual" connotation whatsoever in anything we choose. So I will be extra careful. :)

We got a pdf from our registrar with "suggested readings" to get us started and the "Love is patient, love is kind..." was listed, but without attribution. Everything else had an author or said "anonymous" or something, so it sounds like as long as we don't directly mention religion, or that we're quoting 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 from the Bible, anything goes. They had quotes attributed to Confucius, so I'm not even sure how they're defining "religion".

The City of Edinburgh Council gives you an entire packet of information, and the ceremony part has a variety of options for how things are phrased (or, in most cases, you can write your own).  Nothing religious is allowed, but some are more sentimental than others.  There was one bit which would have been like reading a Hallmark card....

So your council might do something similar.
