Icelandair is the key!! The cost of a one-way ticket is half the cost of RT.

Usually...but that's been my experience. Great airline.

Is Icelandair available in San Diego? May have to look into using them when I fly to the UK for my visit in August ;)

Nearest one is Seattle. If you can get a cheap flight to Newark, then Iceland Express is also an option. Even cheaper than Icelandair, but definitely sardine-class. They're a low-cost airline so only book single tickets anyway...

I did a lot of research on Iceland Express-- (trying to figure cheap ways from NYC-Gatwick).

To make a boring story short, I learned avoid them at all costs!! I believe they only have 5 planes in their fleet, no communication, and if you're stuck due to a cancellation, you can easily wait 2 days for the next flight.

(Important--not to be confused with Icelandair which is ACE!!)

:)

I flew them recently UK -> US -> UK, every flight I was on was delayed by 1-2 hours (not always their fault - one of them was due to passengers not turning up after their bags were loaded into the hold - but pretty poor none the less). There was a very delayed flight just before my one home, and most of the people from that seemed to end up on my flight.

Having said that, they were very, very cheap in comparison to the alternatives, so if you're willing to put up with no legroom and a high probability of being delayed it's worth it.

It can be more than a couple hours...if the flight is cancelled you have to wait TWO DAYS sometimes!!!

Hi all. I highly recommend using www.kayak.com for flight searching (they have a uk counterpart as well). They scour all the sites and get you a concise search response in moments. I definitely recommend this for you, Little Miss Sarcasm if you haven't bought your tickets yet already.

We had an opposite one way vs return experience. We purchased our LAX - LHR tickets for around $600 each (including all taxes) on Air New Zealand because Virgin, which we usually religiously fly, and all the other airlines, were charging well over *$1000* each way, and their return tickets were even more! Since we don't have a set return date, the ANZ tickets rocked our world.

I think in the end it depends on the time of year you are going. Nursefoxfire, you are going right in the middle of peak travel time. You may find that just a month later, fares go down by almost $300! Not only do airlines hate one way travellers, they hate one way travellers who travel mid summer!
