A Re-Introduction, and a Plan

Well, I did the smart thing.

My partner and I talked about it repeatedly, left it alone for a year or so, revisited the topic a few months ago, and left it alone to see if it came back up. It did. It's for real.

My partner and I have talked for years about eventually relocating to the UK. In a year we'll be debt free, no real bills. In the Long-Story-Short Department, we've decided that we will buy a home in the UK rather than in the US. (As a church employee, I am provided with housing here at home and we own a tiny place besides, so in the house department, we're already set here in the US.) We're comfortable with the less-than-six-months rule until the if-and-when of a permanent relocation becomes clearer. It's what we'd like though.

We've settled on Kent to a large degree, for lots of odd reasons that I hope we'll get to chat about as I make new friends here on the forum. I'm really looking forward to this Continuing Ed phase of our plans. Off I go to read. 

Hi!  I just had a look at your previous posts, and allow me to recommend my home county of Dorset as a place you might consider.  It's an easy day trip to London, rural-ish but with great villages, and really truly beautiful scenery. 

That said, if you're planning to "live" here for six months of the year with no visa, you've got a super-duper uphill battle.  Things you need to consider include mortgages, taxes, income, and health care.  There are more, but those are the biggies.

I believe my actual words were "less-than-six-months." I should have been clearer. A week here, a month there. We have started looking into visas all the same. We have a lawyer. We've discussed work opportunities with London friends in a position to help us out. We've spoken to an estate agent. We do not require a mortgage. We are insured, and it checks out detail-wise. Our accountant has informed us of the tax issues.

And with that, you may delete my screen name and membership.
