When I moved 3.5 years ago, it was just me all alone, I rented with a private landlord, found through a letting agency- I had a letter from my employer saying what my salary was gonna be and I just paid a deposit and that was it.  So I think it all depends.

That will be my situation as well.  I will be moving alone so its imperative for me to get a job before I make the move.  I'm not as worried about the job as I am about the place to live.  So I think the consensus (based on the response) is a private landlord.

Now I just have to familiarize myself with different areas as I have no idea where I will be working.  Talk about a needle in a haystack

Yes it can! However, an agency will ask you for a guarantor (some agencies will accept non-UK guarantors while others won't) or you will have to pay several months' rent upfront. Try renting with a private landlord, they are more flexible (if you are looking for a flat, though, and not a room, it's more difficult to find privately advertised property). Start contacting agencies etc early enough to get some first-hand information.

Hi

I wish I had enough money to have a string of properties to rent out to USA movers coming here! but I don't, as you may well know, property pricing is beyond insane in the UK!

I'm a private landlord and as I'm such a good one, my tenants stay long term and I look after them with whatever needs doing (which isn't much!)

I can only suggest to keep scouring the local ads in gumtree, and when you do choose an area to live, the local shops with cards in the window, and also local newspapers and property publications. Private landlords do exist! all the ones I know with plenty of properties to rent are all out this way in Slough and other just outside london areas, so no good for you!

Good luck! Cheers, DtM!

Hi Dennis the Menace,

Thanks for the advice.  It's good to know.  From everything I've read, it does seem quite difficult to find a private landlord.  Thanks so much for the info.  Where exactly is Slough?
