Why is it so difficult to tie up loose ends?
« on: July 14, 2011, 03:02:02 PM »
I'm having a heck of a time getting someone to take over my lease. I didn't think it would be this difficult to find someone who 1. has a job 2. can pass a credit check 3. can pass a background check. I'm really afraid I'll be stuck with this lease that doesn't end until next April. I would do a sublet (which I think is illegal here), but with so much time left on the lease, I'm afraid I will get caught. It's not like it's a month or two.

I'm in the same boat--stuck in a lease for the exact same time as you (But I sublet from a family member). Long story short finding someone to take over is out of the question because she's paranoid.

In New York City you have to sign a 1 or 2 year lease. I liked the San Francisco system of 1 year to start, then by law it converts month-to-month.

Aghhhhh I feel your pain!

Wow, that's pretty rough. I would have hoped family would be more flexible.

I've got two people (supposedly) coming this Saturday to look at it. Hopefully, one of them will work out.

You would think, eh? Nope, not this one...and it's only going to get worse as the move out date approaches. Oh well I have to work about the same amount of time anyway to save up cash so might as well make the best of it.

Hoping it works out too. Does your lease say anything about subletting in particular? Might want to check it out just in case--I think (usually, in lots of places) you do have a right to sublet, but I can just speak for where I've lived around California and New York, and my sister's experience in Chicago.

Not sure if this helps, but I got my super to let me sign a 3 month lease so I could stay in NYC until I was ready to leave.  I'm sure it helped that its just a guy who owns a building though and not a huge managment company.

I've already made plans to live in a youth hostel for 4 nights a week for 2 months when my lease expires.

(aside from my family issue, the building is owned by a mega landlord. You would think they would LOVE for me (my relative) to break the lease because they could triple the rent...but it's just a messy situation)

I'm learning that there is less flexibility when renting through a big management company. All I hear from them is "we can't." Which, to me, translates into "We don't want to."
