Moving from CT to London!
« on: July 23, 2011, 04:13:48 PM »
Hi all!  We'll (DH, 9yo DD and I) be joining you in January!

This is our second trip over the Atlantic.  We moved to Sofia, BG, in August 2007 and repatriated in August 2009.  Hopefully this time will be a little easier since I know the language (nuances to be learned shortly  ;) )

DH is already there on a part-time basis, four weeks there and two weeks here.  Partly because we want to ease our way over (we moved to BG only three months after the initial decision, avoid that if you can), and partly because we have two cats and a dog so we're in the PETS waiting period.  His office is located on Knightsbridge, and he has decided he really likes Richmond so we're concentrating our house/flat/townhouse hunt there.

We're also home educating here in the US, but we may change that when we get there.  Lots of details to look into.

Hope to learn from and help out other Yanks heading to London!

Why do they call CT the nutmeg state? It doesn't grow there, does it? I've always wondered...

Welcome to UKY!  :) I'll also be moving around the same time and have to go through the wonderful PETS process with my dog.   :-\\\\  Although, if you're definitely moving in January 2012...there are new pet rules (less strict).  Might want to look into those!

Thanks, JessF!  Since we started the process back in April, before things were announced and we knew we were leaving on 3 January, we went ahead and got the blood work and testing done and are in the waiting period (or as I call it, in-home quarantine).

I talked with the folks at DEFRA yesterday, and the tapeworm & tick treatment requirement is still up in the air.  I'd love if that can be avoided, since it's one less thing I have to do the day before we leave; we'd probably do it a month ahead of the trip instead of between 24 and 48 hours ahead as the current regs require.

You piqued my curiosity so just looked it up. The story is that the early settlers were so shrewd that they were able to make -- and sell -- wooden nutmegs.

And welcome to cooksinuk!

I just realised you already posted in the Pets forum.  Sorry about that!  Good luck with the whole process.   :)
