Trunks or Foot Lockers
« on: August 15, 2012, 02:09:27 AM »
Anyone know where to get a decent sized trunk or foot locker for less than $50? I bought the biggest one Walmart had (still under airline requirements), and it wasn't big enough. Thinking I might go to Lowes tomorrow and find one...

Thing is, I'm trying to take my desktop PC with me. I know it's risky taking it on the airline, I've weighed all of my options and doing it this way with baggage or travelers' insurance is the most cost effective/easiest way for me. I can't NOT bring my PC because I'm going to school for animation, and my machine was built by me specifically to handle heavy performance software like that. Soooo... In your experience, where did you find a decent travel trunk or foot locker?

You'd think because my ex husband was a Marine and I had to kick his foot lockers out of the way all of the time, I would've thought of that... But I didn't. Bit slow sometimes. I'll keep that in mind as a last resort. I really kind of want a trunk with the flat sides all around, no indents for handles and such like foot lockers have. But yes... Definitely will pop over to the military surplus store if all else fails. Thanks for the reminder!

How about using Fedex (or an alternative carrier) to ship the PC to the UK? I recently shipped technical equipment from the UK to Asia and the cost was reasonable, with insurance as an extra cost.

How much was it, if you don't mind me asking? I checked with USPS, FedEx, UPS... It all ranged from $250-$400. :/ Whereas the airline just charges $60 for the extra suitcase, and insurance is about $40.

This is just my feeling on the matter, but I don't think I'd trust something that important to the general airline baggage handling process.

I'd personally feel a lot safer shipping with a courier, despite the additional cost, if for no other reason than package tracking.

Also, in my experience, you'll find better-fitting packing materials if you're shipping in a standard-sized heavy cardboard shipping box, than in something non-standard (to the electronics industry) like a footlocker.
