Sunshower - Devil beating his wife
« on: August 02, 2011, 08:25:54 AM »
I was talking to my very southern Auntie and she remarked that "the devil was beating his wife with a frying pan". She said it meant that it was raining and the sun was shining at the same time. I have never heard that one.

I live in the south, and first heard "the devil is beating his wife" for a sunshower back in the 1980s.

I've heard a variety of God and Devil related expressions about weather and I have heard that one before.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Best saying ever!

Is saying you have a hole in your chin a southern thing?  I said it at work the other day and no one had ever heard it before.

I have definitely heard this one in the south!

There are so many local terms for sun showers. I know in Japanese it is something like "Foxes wedding".

Interestingly, my (UKC) DH and his UKC friends had never heard of sun showers or any term for raining when its sunny. Are there any UK terms for them?

My granddad used to say 'Sunshine rain - snow in April!'  :)
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

According to Wikipedia: In parts of the United Kingdom, it is referred to as "a monkey's birthday".

My grandmother used to say "It's hotter than Satan's armpit in July"

:-\\\\ which gives me a really gross mental image that makes me want to take a shower.
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

My husband says it is called most days.  ;)  He's never heard of the monkey's birthday.

In this part of Scotland i've always heard it referred to as foxes getting married.   ;D
