Any screenwriters or writers out there?
« on: October 07, 2011, 08:41:05 PM »
I just submitted my second screenplay to Scriptapalooza today. Just wanna see if there's any writers out there. If so, have any of you thought about submitting your work?

I say second screenplay because my first, I wrote about ten years ago.... And it's way too long to submit as a movie. It would be more like a miniseries. Lol.

A few years ago, I started to put down scenes for a story. I was doing it out of sequence and was doing well with it then, CRASH!...loads of things came along and halted many things including my writing. I am so against anyone else editing and I swear the worst part is shortening the story to fit! That and showing thoughts! Haha! It couldn't be a play and the story is so important that it needs to be more visual than a novel. I always thought Brian Glasser would be ideal for this project!

Best wishes for your work!

Thanks a lot. I will let everyone know if I place. But that won't be until August of next year.

My screenplay started out of sequence too, then you just fill it in with thoughts. I started this one in 2002, so it's taken 9 years for everything to fall into place. so I'd suggest to stick with it. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's first screenplay Good Will Hunting took them YEARS to write. But it's the one that put them on the map!

Showing thoughts on a screenplay is easy too, just write out the action parts as though you are writing a book. I swear it works! :-)

I started, and still muck with a bit, a play called "The Platform" which is based on a group of college friends who set up a neighbourhood political organisation. It deals, or tries to, with how real life affects ideals. But to me writing dialogue is terribly hard. It sounds like a Mickey Spillane novel.

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Lol! The only thing I've ever found hard about dialogue is trying not to start every sentence with the same word (a little 'rule' I picked up from my English lit classes). It makes for some interesting maneuvering.

Turn that play into a screenplay! I never realized how similar they are. I bought a program called Final Draft and it really helps in keeping everything in standard Motion Picture format.

When my DH was in his late 20's he and his now ex made a few movies and were in the movie business....but alas one of the business associates made off with all the money and they went broke......now he writes books, has sent his first one to a few people he knows for an opinion, and is now starting the preliminaries on his 3rd book.  He will begin looking for an agent soon and hope to have something published......his dream.

His 1st book is based on the equestrian field, he used to be a writer for several of the local magazines in the Southeast, and it is a murder/thriller......the 2nd one is about money laundering, mmorpg's and another murder/thriller and the 3rd is a murder mystery....they are all quite good and I am very proud of him.

Wow that's awesome, good luck to him. I have started a couple books, but my knack is definitely screenplays. I think books are so much more intricate than screenplays, and my attention span only goes for so long. Haha. Hopefully he can find an agent. That's my next step. I have a good friend in Hollywood who just published his first book through Penmen Elite, so I was thinking of seeing what they're about first. We'll see!

Almost every one of my lines starts with "well":

"Well Jim, how was your day?"
"Well it could have been better Bill."

That and they say each other's names too much:

"Edna you look ravishing!"
"How nice of you to notice, Ralph."

Hilarious! Well, you could always finish it up and have someone rewrite it for you. as long as they keep the concept the same and get some credit, it might work!

Thanks for the encouragement. I think this suits my attention span too, at that time, now that doesn't work! Can't remember title right this minute but I bought a screenplay textbook that Universities use and it is good as are books by a woman named Linda! Hahaha, whew, my brain is so frazzled.

Lol I know what you mean. That's why it took me 9 years to finish. Life got in the way.

Not sure what book you mention, but My husband just bought me The Screenwriter's Bible which is really really good. Gave me some good tips before I actually turned my script in. I think its like £20-30 pounds on Amazon.co.uk and the major screenwriting websites recommend it.
