NYC to Suffolk
« on: August 11, 2011, 01:19:56 PM »
Hello
Just signed up as my NYC girlfriend is moving over to England next month.  We've sorted the job, visa, cats, freighting and a dressing room for her in the house but the biggest problem is the TV.  She just bought a 50" beast a couple of months ago in the states.  Has anyone tried using a US TV in the UK????  I'm thinking of getting a convertor and just watching DVDs on it if digital won't work.  She also has 2 Air Conditioners she wants to bring.....I've said she won't need them but insists on having them, has anyone tried them here?
I'm sure I'll be back with many more questions after our usual evening Skype tonight.
Cheers,
Tom

I think the problem with the TV will be that it is NTSC rather than PAL.....not sure if digital will work with a HDMI cable or not.
As for the air conditioners, not tried them, I suspect they will work with a plug adapter but I'm loathe to have anything connected like that which will be on for any length of time....mind you,  air con over here shouldn't be on for any length of time!  ;D

Air conditioners use a massive amount of power, you'd need a huge converter for it.

Usually when you turn on an air con the lights dim for a few seconds.

I bet she could sell the ac's on craigs list in no time.  They just seem very difficult, and pointless to bring over.

And the TV. Besides the NTSC issue, she should find out whether the voltage is compatible. I don't know what that voltage is (my husband takes care of the electrical bits!) but if she's really serious about bringing it, she should look in to it - maybe even calling the manufacturer. At the end of the day, if it's brand new, she'll shift that puppy with almost no loss in $$ in no time.

On another note. Having a 50" TV for only watching DVDs makes me sad.

hi,
she really won't need the AC here---it just doesn't get that hot compared to the states---it was really surprising to me how cool even the summers are here.  best wishes
