Why is it so difficult to find a room???
« on: September 05, 2011, 12:40:16 PM »
I have been looking for a month now. Either I'm in a pool of potential flatmates to be interviewed and don't get chosen in the end OR the landlord/flatmate in charge tells me the next day that s/he has offered the room to another then I see the renewed advert on the same site a few days later OR the landlord/flatmate tells me that the other flatmates to also be met are difficult to get a hold of then finally just disappears. My student status (though mature and postgraduate) doesn't seem to help. I've never had such a hard time...!

I can sympathise! Not a student, but possessed of a cat and dog....if that dog doesn't scare people off (usually does, even though he's a super easy flat dog!), the cat does. :(

No advice to give, but good luck!

I sympathise as well! I'm also looking for a room, and it's been a headache for the same reasons you describe, although I'm not a student. I have surprisingly found places open to my dog, but I don't mention it until I am actually there viewing the room.

I know how hard it is. When me and the DH had to share for a while in order to save for our own flat, it was frustrating to be interviewed by people we'd probably not be friends with after we move out. Who knows why the Hammersmith bedsit guy never called back. We ended up doing short term flatshares instead. We lived in some great areas we'd never have been able to afford on our own, usually subletting from a traveling Aussie. Another thought, have you posted a flat share wanted ad on gumtree? Maybe you'll find a like minded student to get a flat with!

I'm beginning to think that the English ones don't want a foreign flatmate.  :-[

I wouldn't be surprised if that is the case, but it sometimes will work in your favor as well!

Don't know if it will help at all, but I just got an email today for this site .  I'm not sure where you're looking for a place, but maybe it will have something relevant?  If you're looking for a flat share, DB has also used spareroom.co.uk in the past and it worked out great for him.

good luck!

Thanks. I've been using gumtree, spareroom and moveflat. No luck yet though today I'm going to a speed flatmating event.  :P
