Giving Notice of Marriage at Leeds?
« on: September 28, 2011, 05:56:01 PM »
We live in Pontefract, and were told we both need to go to Leeds to give Notice because I am not a UK national.

What exactly do they do there?

I thought the whole process of obtaining a fiancee visa was that they already checked out that our divorces were legal and finalized, that we are over 18, etc. etc., basically that we met all the requirements needed to be married in England.

So I guess I am just wondering why it seems I have to prove this all over again?

Also, when we made the appointment, we paid for both of us to give notice, so I guess my fiance will be giving his notice at Leeds instead of Pontefract as well (he is a UK citizen)?

And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

I just gave notice in May, and you are right they are going to repeat a lot of the things that you have already shown in getting the fiance visa. I think it is mainly because they have the same process for everyone. They also go over how your wedding certificate is going to look like and the whole notice period bit.

You'll be giving notice together, because I think only in very rare circumstances notice is given separately.

Thank you, CaliGirl.  It does seem a bit redundant, but if that's what's got to be done!

The siliest bit is that the process isn't any different for foreign nationals than it is for citizens/EU residents. I know they require to give notice at specific offices, but I honestly thought we'd get more questions about immigration, etc. But we didn't. I wonder what happens if they think something is shady.

So do they interview you, or do you just submit paperwork?  How long are you in the office/at the appointment?

They spoke to us together and then apart, asking what the other person's name was, DOB and job, and then spoke to us together to take down the details for the certificate and then took our money. Finally they went over the different ceremony types. It didn't take long at all. Maybe 10 minutes? The longest bit for was waiting, our appointment didn't start on time at all.
