I have made it!!
« on: September 09, 2004, 11:44:14 AM »
Hello one and all, just wanted to write a quick message here to let you all know that I arrived safely in England yesterday, to the waiting arms of my lovely husband!!

The flight was absolutely disasterous, there was pretty much no food (except for veggie meals and such) there was no drink to be had...unless you were having beer and the conditions on the plane were horrible whilst waiting for them to track down bags etc. I couldn't wait to get off of that thing.

But finally we arrived at Gatwick airport and we all headed in our seperate directions to our respective sides. I went up to one of the guy's that helps you fill out your landing card and he asked to see my passport, which I gave to him...he told me to proceed ahead and so I did. I got up to the lady and she asked me how long I was staying for and I told her I was coming over on a spousal visa. She asked me if I was traveling with my husband and I said no that he and my mother-in-law were picking me up. She questioned me about my visitors visa that was in there and I just told her it was from a long time ago (almost a year since that incident now) she stamped my passport and told me Good Luck.

I thought at that point I was supposed to be getting some information on what I'm supposed to do after the two years. And another thing that was brought to my attention is, do I need to apply for a NIN before I can start working/get paid? My brother-in-law seems to think that it's only available to british citizens but I wasn't too sure about that. Please inform if anyone knows!!

Thanks so much again you lot for being there for me when I needed you all the most!! Just wanted to let you know that I had arrived safely and that things are already great on this end!!

*hugs to all* You are all stars!!!

Welcome to the UK! (Veggie food is nice btw!)
You can look for a job without an NI #. Just be sure to apply for one as soon as you are offered a job. You can still be paid without it. Just tell your employer you are in the process of applying for one.

You apply for SET(M) in the last month of your 2 years.

Look in the employment/jobs threads for NIN interview information and experiences.

And welcome!

Welcome "home"!!!

After your 2 years you have to apply for yet another visa - an Indefinite Leave To Remain (correct me if I'm wrong on that anyone - I'm nowhere near that step yet, but a good friend of mine is....)

And to echo Squirrel, your employer will stick a temporary NIN on your paperwork and you still can be paid before you get your real one. And even though they say that you're allowed to get a number before you find work, my JobCentre wouldn't give me an appointment until I had a letter confirming employment (against the law I'm pretty sure, but I didn't feel like fighting....)

And there's a pretty current thread on the whole NIN interview process. In fact, I'm about to post my experience there right now!

Congrats on getting here!
