Child support
« on: September 30, 2011, 08:46:14 PM »
Hi
My daughter is American and she lived in the UK for 3 years. While there she got pregnant. She moved back to the US with her child when she was 6 months old the father did not want to come. baby is now 2. She has not heard from the father since moving to the US and he has never paid child support. Is there anything she can do? She does not have a job in the US but is in collage so cant afford a lawyer. Any advice.

I'm pretty sure you would need a lawyer to assist in this situation.

She can contact her local Child Support Agency if there is an existing court order for support. If there isn't she will need to file for Child Support order and can contact her local Family Law Center (most cities have them) for assistance in doing so. UK & the US have agreements to enforce each others Child Support Orders so if the absent parent has income & your daughter has (or can get) a court order then they can do a garnishment of his wages.
