Sallie Mae loans
« on: May 22, 2013, 11:30:08 PM »
Ever since I moved to the UK, I have had this process to pay my student loans with Sallie Mae. Now it wouldn't be so bad if it was just a simple bank transfer. It's not as easy as that. My husband sends me the money to my PayPal account then I transfer it to my bank account in the US. Then once the money is in my account, I can pay the bill. It takes about 4 days to get into my account back in the US then another 2-4 days to pay the bill. It gets annoying to have to do this every month just to pay my student loans which are costing me a fortune to begin with for just an Associates. It would be so much easier if I had a bank account with a bank and no a credit union as money can't be transferred between the world types of accounts. Why does it have to be so hard?!! And Sallie Mae doesn't give any options to pay by card. Only by using bank details. Ahhhhh.

I have my loans through Nelnet - I haven't had to deal with paying them since in the Uk because I don't have any income yet. So I am put in the economic hardship category for now. But just like SM, Nelnet does not have any other options to pay which I find a bit silly and I really never understood why.  Do have any family that could give their bank details to SM and pay each month and just have you transfer the money to your family as needed? That may cut a few days off of waiting around for payments to go through and avoid any late fees if there is a delay.  With SM being the sharks that they are, might not be a great idea though...  >:(

I use a credit union in the US and I transfer directly from my UK bank account to my US credit union online.

What credit union and bank is it you use? And how do you transfer the money over from one account to the other?
As far as my family and asking for their help, they would probably help out just never really thought to ask.

I have Sallie Mae loans and I have been using XE to transfer money from my UK bank account to my US account.  I try to put a lump sum over if we can afford it so I only have to do it every other month, but it is a pain still...

I never thought to use XE to transfer money. I might look into that and see if it might be better than the monthly craziness.

I belong to a local credit union in the US and have a Bank of Scotland account here.

I just called up and got the codes from my credit union.  If you can do a direct deposit to your credit union there shouldn't be a reason why you can't do a transfer.
