Even the towns get titles in England! I had no idea. This has totally made me giggle.
There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:  twins.

Yep.  That's why Kensington and Chelsea is known as "The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea".  Greenwich will get a royal patronage after the Diamond Jubilee.

Wootton Bassett got the honour because of how they handled the repatriation of the bodies of soldiers mainly from Iraq and Afghanistan.

I *think* in order to become a city, a town has to have a royal charter, which isn't the same as royal patronage, but more common.

Things and organisations can have royal charters and patronages as well.

Rye was allowed to call itself Rye Royal after Elizabeth I visited (persistent rumor has it some gold pieces changed hands). The charter is in the museum.

There's a little back road into town called Dead Man's Lane that was part of the queen's path. She stopped for a drink of water at what is still known as the Queen's Well. Every time we pass it, I can't resist barking, "stop here! One is thirsty!"

"One could murder a pint!"

"One needs to wet one's whistle!"
