since I can't get plain Cheerios here...
« on: December 09, 2011, 10:09:36 AM »
Can anyone recommend another low-sugar cereal that would be a good snack for my 10-month old daughter?  I'm hoping my mom will be able to squeeze a box of US Cheerios in her luggage next week, but I still need to find a UK alternative.  Any thoughts?

Sorry I don't have any but I constantly am asking people to bring them over so if you find a good alternative, please let me know.  I have yet to find an alternative that I like. :-)

My mum used to take the Cheerios out of the box and put them in several small plastic bags to tuck in her suitcase. Handy for those jaunts out with the little ones.
Isn't there something like Mini-Wheats in the UK? (Not the same as Cheerios, I know  :-\\\\)

There was a shop in Dublin that sold some American cereals and you could always spot who was American with their yellow box of Cheerios in their basket!

I can't really think of any alternatives. I was trying to think what my friends would give their kids and I know they would get a lot of the organic treats on offer at Boots.

There are a couple of places to get American food items in London.  It's not cheap, but sugar free Cheerios are easily available.

Panzers in St. Johns Wood:

Shepherd Foods in Primrose Hill:

USA Food Store in Notting Hill (I think):

Selfridges on Oxford Street in the food hall.

Good list, but just to clarify: a serving of "plain" ordinary Cheerios does have 1 g. of sugar.

I guess I should have specified American vs English Cheerios but I hope you got the picture.

I think it's because they're the multi-grain cheerios.  Which are glazed in the US as well.

But yes...yuck.

Thanks everyone.  I did see American Cheerios at Partridge's (same co. as Shepherd's) but I just can't justify spending £8 on a box of cereal!  I found puffed wheat at Sainsbury's on Friday and my daughter seems to like it fine, although it tastes like cardboard to me.  But it was the only low-sugar cereal I could find for her.  I'll keep searching, though, and hopefully my mom will be able to squeeze some US Cheerios into her luggage this week.
