Going back to Education...
« on: January 17, 2012, 09:29:10 PM »
I dont know if this is the right place to put this, so excuse me if I put this in the wrong place.

Im getting tired of being a customer service rep and looking to take on a change.. I was thinking of possibly becoming qualified as a bookkeeper. Its kinda in the blood - Mum is one and sister is an Accountant. I wasn't great at complicated math in school (sequential math is the death of me) but did really well in the business math course I took. I have a great eye for detail and like repetitive tasks, so thought this might be better for me than being a slave to a headset.

Has anyone done this and if so how would I go about getting started? Would I need to retake any tests or get transcripts of my high school reports to go forward? Is this something I would need to go to a Uni for or could a local college take me on?

Any and all information would be a great help.

Good for you Kerri!

I can speak from my own perspective of going back to school very recently, after 20 years and I'm a university student advisor - I have experience on both sides of the pond.

First thing I would do is look at programs and see what they're all about.  You might be able to narrow down your program just from the courses.  There are so many choices but you can most likely narrow them down from proximity to your home and what your interests are.

Once you find a few that look promising, then contact the schools.  You will be entering as a mature student so there will be different entrance requirements for you than for an A-lev or transfer student.   Start with admissions and see what feel you get.  They will also clarify the entrance requirements for you in your program of choice.  I would highly, highly advise speaking to an advisor in your faculty of choice; someone who can speak specifically about the requirements of the degree programme.

And finally, once you have all of that information, then worry about what you have to do to get there, with transcripts etc..

I know from my own experience of going back to school, that it has been fabulous and I love being a student.  I just wish I didn't have to work full-time as well, in order to pay those pesky bills!

Please pm me if you want; I'm happy to help.

Thank you so much! I'll definite send you message if I need any help...
The first thing I'm doing on Monday is contacting the local College to see whats available to me as a 35 yr old and what I need to do to go forward... I'm hoping I'll be able to get a bursar or some other kind of financial assistance.. I've been out of work for awhile, so I think if I sign on I can qualify for some help..
