my oven sucks
« on: December 21, 2011, 10:58:54 PM »
so the stove works brilliantly and so does the little toaster broiler thing on the top.. but the oven... LOL

as soon i saw the bolt of flame from the back, i knew even cooking wasn't gonna happen. i got and set it at the right temp, i roasted some veggies and chicken... and the veggies were burning on the outside before really cooking so i turned the fire down... gotta get a therm i guess to be exact on what kinda temp im working with...

but.. just kinda leaves me a bit depressed. doubt i'll be baking or roasting a turkey any time soon.  :\\\'(

just wanted to vent for a sec!

Yeah, definitely pick up an oven thermometer! We've got an enormous beast of a catering oven on our boat (ex-hotel barge) and the dial is so off that we're not certain whether it's in F or C, but with the oven thermometer, we're able to know about where on the dial to set it to get the temp we need.

Another good thing is to get a pizza stone, or put some bricks in the bottom of the oven. Both really help to distribute the heat more evenly, but you've got to give either ideally ~30 minutes to warm up before they do much.

I used to have a gas oven, and I really struggled to bake in it, but lots of people prefer them to electric ovens. I agree with the ap, get a thermometer and just make sure the oven is preheated well before using it. I had the gas overn for a good 8 years before getting a new electric one about 5 years ago.

Gas hobs = amazing
Gas ovens = temperamental.

At least half an hour of preheating, get 2 oven thermometers and place them in different parts of your oven as you can have a VAST temperature gradient between different shelves and remember to adjust cooking times depending on if you're cooking in black metal or glass baking dishes.

I do cook a lot in mine, including turkeys and baking and it's mostly fine. I find it doesn't handle consistency at low temperatures very well, so thinks like macaroons, I have to watch it like a freaking hawk, I've sat by the oven with a book before! :)

I have a quick read digital temp probe which works a treat :)
