returning packages
« on: December 23, 2011, 10:08:27 PM »
I feel like a dumb newbie with this question ??? but I have a couple of packages to return to Amazon and I've printed out the Royal Mail return labels but how I do I get them picked up?  I thought I could just leave them on my doorstep but no such luck.  I've been spoiled by years of living in a doorman building in NYC.  Do I have to bring the packages to the post office or is there any way I can get them to come collect them?  TIA...

You need to take them to a post office.

The only people who will collect packages from your house are couriers like FedEx/UPS/DHL, where you have arranged for home pick-up beforehand. For everything else, you have to sort it out yourself by taking the packages to the post office and arranging the return delivery yourself (or by paying the postage/attaching the label and then posting them in a red postbox if they will fit).

I know that my aunt in the US leaves letters and packages in her mailbox/outside her door and the mailman will pick them up for her and take them to be delivered (she lives in the suburbs, so no doorman or anything) , but here in the UK there is no such service offered... the postman will deliver post to your house, but won't pick it up for you.

If youre lucky, you wont have to wait in line though. Most smaller post offices will have a bag or box to drop packages in after theyve been stamped.
Since youve got return postage on there, just drop the box off and go.

Personally I would wait and get proof of postage- if the package goes missing, you are then covered.
