E-filing in UK with NRA UKC Spouse
« on: February 09, 2012, 06:29:54 PM »
Hi everyone,

I just finished my taxes and wanted to let you all know that TaxACT online allowed me to e-file with a foreign address and spouse.

In fact, they had a box to tick which said "My spouse is a non-resident alien and doesn't need a SSN or ITIN" which was the first I had seen on all of the sites I had used.

I literally just finished, so they haven't been officially accepted by the IRS yet, but I just thought I would let everyone know that this was an option of hot to e-file when living abroad and married to a NRA.

I will update when/if they are accepted and my refund is issued in case others are interested in this option.

If you were not married until 2012, the you were correct in filing as single for 2011. Your status at the end of the tax year determines this in your case.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

I got the email last night confirming that the IRS has accepted the return and I will receive my refund electronically in about a week's time. YAY!

The total fees for the service and electronic transfer was around $29, I believe, but that is on par with many of the other sites I have used in the past and to have the "my spouse is an NRA" box was wonderful. All that made the fee was worth it to me to be able to e-file and receive my refund quicker.

Good luck everyone!

This will greatly simplify filing for those that have an NRA spouse, no more paper! Not meaning to be picky, but which TaxACT product did you use? I can see the Free Federal Edition, Deluxe Federal Edition ($9.95 + State) and the Ultimate Bundle ($17.95 inc State). You say you used the "online" version, but how did the cost came to around $29? Thanks...

So my fees came to $26.90 I used the deluxe federal + state version which was but then there was some sort of electronic transfer fee (I believe) added on at the end. I was so excited that it was going through after trying so many sites that I kind of rushed through the payment at the end and didn't check the exact fees closely enough :)

Here is the breakdown from "My Fees" section

Quote
TaxACT Online Deluxe and State Edition

Your Federal Return fee is $9.95 and State Return fee is $8.00.
Additional State Returns are $14.95.
If you elect to deduct the product fee from your Federal or State refund, there is a bank fee of $16.95 that will also be deducted from your refund.
If you choose the Endeavor Debit Card there is a fee of $16.95 and you can choose to have your product fees deducted from your refund or pay by credit card. If a 2nd Debit card is chosen, there is an additional fee of $5.00.
