National Insurance Number for Spouse not working
« on: July 22, 2012, 09:20:33 AM »
Hello,

We have Tier 2 visa's (daughter, wife, and me) and will be here for several years. My wife is pregnant and will be giving birth this September, is not working now, and we don't expect her to while here. I am in the process of acquiring a National Insurance # and am wondering if she should apply for one herself even though we don't expect her to work while here.

The answer seems obvious (no) but any suggestions?

Thanks!

-Ben

If she's not going to be working and not going to be claiming benefits or tax credits (which neither of you can legally do anyway), then there's not much point in applying for one for her now.

Also, I believe that in order to get one, she may have to show evidence that she is either looking for work or has a job offer - and if she's having a baby soon, it's unlikely that she will be looking for work in the near future anyway.

If she decides to work later on, she can apply for one then.
