us student loan refund?
« on: January 08, 2012, 05:41:43 PM »
Hi --

I was wondering if any of you received a tax refund from your US student loans? I pay more than $600 in interest on student loans each year. I know that if I were in the US I would be able to get a deduction. I am of course working in the UK instead. If any of you were able to get a refund for any of your student loans, how much were you refunded? Is it the percentage of UK tax you pay? Or nothing at all - since I'm not working in the US?

Thanks for your help!

If you are a US citizen, you need to file with the US anyway no matter where you live and work (see myriad threads on this topic), so you can still claim your interest deduction as long as you are filing with a status that allows it (like single or married filing jointly). You can either claim foreign tax credits for the tax you pay in the UK, or claim an exclusion on foreign income. All the information is on the IRS website and on this forum as well.

Hi higheredgirl,

I will leave it to others to determine whether student loan interest is deductible on a HMRC return. if you plan to claim student loan interest on your US return you need to complete the worksheet in IRS publication 970 when you claim the foreign earned income exclusion. I hope this helps.

Just for clarity, the UK ceased to gives tax relief for student loan interest back in the 1970s.
