Low Income In The UK
« on: January 13, 2012, 09:04:39 PM »
Hello to all fellow expats!

I'm new expat from the US. Only been here since July 23, 2011. Just started a December 14, 2011. Only working 10 hours a week @ minimum wage. Recently received my first monthly salary from December 2011. I notice on my payslip nothing was deducted from my salary(no taxes, no national insurance contributions). My supervisor cleared it up for me today why they haven't deducted anything. My question is will i have to pay taxes when i file US Federal Tax this year?

If you are only working ten hours a week at minimum wage then probably not because you still get your exemption in the US.

I suppose it will depend if you start working more hours, or earn more money.

Hi pirate73,
if your earnings are below $9500 for 2011 you are not required to file a 2011 tax return. In the alternative, you could file and claim the overseas exclusion on form 2555. You'll need to file the form in 2012, so it may make sense to become familiar with this form during 2011. You should also review publication 54 available on the IRS website. If you have a foreign bank account in 2011 that needs to be disclosed. You may have a state filing requirement that is different. I hope this helps.

Pirate, I am looking at relocating to the UK and would like to get a lil info from you on how to go about it. If you could respond on here or via email mcunnin1969 @ aim.com it would be greatly appreciated.

If you have questions about relocating to the UK, it is best to start a new thread somewhere other than the tax section to get people to look at it.  The Welcome Wagon board is a good start.
