Any Mandarin Immersion elementary schools in the UK?
« on: March 13, 2009, 05:09:44 PM »
My son is in a K-8 Mandarin immersion program in the US and we may be sent back to London soon.  I was wondering if there are any similar programs in the UK?  Do any schools have immersion programs (we're in one that is English one day, Mandarin the next) or do they call it something else over there?

Those are Saturday schools though or places where they tutor Chinese, mainly to Chinese expats or children of Chinese immigrants.  I think penquinsix is looking for actual schools.

Thanks for the list.  They do look mainly like weekend schools but it is a good enough place to start.

What we're looking for is a school that teaches 'in Mandarin' not necessarily a school that 'teaches Mandarin'.  Many of the immersion programs in the US teach certain classes in the foreign language, so you'll learn math in English and another language, which is what we're hoping to find.  But we'll probably take what we can get.

Hi penguinsix,

Do you have any info on the Chinese immersion school in UK?  Because my daughter is in Chinese immersion school here in US and we are planning to move to UK probably this fall.  Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Sorry, nope.  I moved to Hong Kong for a few years instead.

From talking to folks here (many UK expats) few have heard of any Mandarin immersion programs in the UK.  It's a big concern that they discuss with folks here before entering an immersion program, as many are advised NOT to start an immersion program if they think they will be moving to an English-only school within the first seven or eight years (the student's English may not be at the same level as his peers).

Good luck with the move.

Hi Penguinsix, UK is miles behind USA in setting up foreign language immersion school, we are too slow and too conservative, we didn't wanna change unless we are forced to do so :D

In the uk we call it bilingual primary (age 4-11), unfortunately this is something very new to us, as far as i know there is only one of this kind in London, and it is English French Bilingual Primary. I want my kids to be fluent in Mandarin and English, so I have teamed up with a group of other enthusiastic parents & teachers to set up the 1st Mandarin Bilingual Primary in the UK, I understand you might move back to UK soon, so do you think you can join us too? your experience and advice from USA will be of great benefit to us. thanks.
