So I missed the 15th of June deadline for filing taxes...
« on: June 18, 2004, 08:22:04 AM »
I can't believe I'm the only one who missed the deadline. I knew better as well...I just thought somehow I had three months' extension instead of two! What happens now?

I certainly didn't earn enough to owe tax, but I didn't file Form 4868 ("Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return") to get the extension til 16 August. Do I still need to fill it in, or can I just fill in my other forms as I usually do?

What do I need to do?

And are there going to be consequences?  :-[

Okay, maybe I shouldn't feel like such a renegade then. If I don't owe anything, then I won't have a penalty...therefore next year I won't feel any incentive at all to get it in on time!  ;)

I dont think theres a penalty for people that done owe. I mean, when I had to do my affidavit of support for martin's green card application I had to supply tax returns and had no idea up until that day that I had to file even though I was living in the UK. So I just filed a couple of years of back taxes with no problem at all. I havent sent mine in for this year yet either!

There are no interest or penalty charges if you do not owe any tax to the IRS for Federal and State tax purposes.

You're not the only one who missed the deadline.  I did file the extra 2-month extension, but on the same day the first 2-month extension ended!  Oops.  Thankfully I won't owe anything either, so no penalty, but I still can't be bothered to fill out those stupid forms just to come up with a big fat zero.  I'll get around to it eventually...  ho hum.   ;)

I finally finished my taxes!!!  :)  I really wish hubs would stop changing from employed, to self employed, to partnership, etc.  I have to learn new forms every year and I'm going to be bald if he keeps this up.  Thank goodness it's done for another year.

Where's the Bolly?  :D   [smiley=balloon.gif]

To claim the foreign earned income exclusion you must file a return even if you owe no taxes.  This also must be done in a timely manner.  Typically within one year.  The IRS can disallow your exclusion even if you qualify for the residence or presence test and made less than $80,000.  For example that tax free $55K you made becomes taxable.

If you let several years pass and the IRS audits you may find yourself in the middle of a canyon with no water and a boulder pinning you down with only a pocket knife.
