California to Hull
« on: February 26, 2012, 04:59:21 PM »
I've been lurking about, reading and posting a few comments here and there and I realized that I've failed to introduce myself.

I am an International Student at the University of Hull and though I am staying with my boyfriend who is a UK citizen and resident of Hull, I am currently here on a Student Visa.  I hope to have my MA at the end of September of this year and from there we hope to be able to be married at some point.

I have already found this site to be full of useful information and I have already told others who are coming to the UK so they too might talk to others who can help them in their process in moving from the US to the UK.

Hello, I am new to this site as of this week but I have been married to a British soldier for 12 years. I moved and married here in 2000 but we moved every 2 years and therefore I have not been in one place.

I have found this site to be quite useful and friendly so far. I would be happy to help out with my limited experiencese. Also you may want to check out Facebook, which have 2 groups of expats who are helpful and friendly too.

In any event, thanks for dropping me a line, i am always happy to meet new people and let me know if you need any advice. Cheers.

Hello

Lots of good info here and loads to sort out. Don't know if you are the worrying type but if so, do not get caught up in over analysing like I do! Whew! I never learn. ):

The only thing I am worried about right now is getting my research done by September!  :)  And a job, I could use a few pennies coming in every now and then.  :)

Good to hear from you.  I'll be moving with my family from the Los Angeles area to Kent this Summer...happy to see other Californians making the move!

I like Hull well enough though I am not too fond of where I am currently living.  As with any city, there are places that are nicer than others and as I am living in what we'd consider mid-town, it's not that great.  But we're close to town center so that if we wanted to walk we can, though I rarely make that decision.  I have a car dagnabit and I don't wanna walk.  :)  I learned to drive the British way on the narrow, confining, streets of Hull and I have thus been informed that if I can drive in Hull I can drive anywhere.  My future MIL is living in Brighton and wants us to visit over Easter so I suppose we shall see.

And yeah, it is nice to know there are other Californians in the country, even if they are in different parts.  I personally blame the weather we've been having since last September on me.  It seems as if I bring our wonderful, California weather with me wherever I go.  I just hope, for the sake of the locals that they don't actually get a Sacramento summer here... they'd die.  If they think 70 is beyond hot then they'd hate triple digit weather.  :)

My DH is from Hull as well.  Grew up on Newland Ave.  My BIL lives on Boothferry now.  It's a nice city, IMO.  Not sure if we'll move there when we first get to the UK or if we'll try to head straight to London (depends on if we can find jobs prior to moving).

As for Californians...I'm not from Cali, but did live in LA for a few years.   ;D

kbee: We're getting closer! DH grew up in Anlaby...he usually gets eyerolls when he tells "real" Hull folks.

ehmy: Love your approach to living there. Find the good in everything!

I am living just off of Beverley Road so I know those streets!  :)  I don't have a huge mental map of Hull yet but I know how to get to where I need to go and for everything else there's the AA's satnav app for the iPhone and that is nice because it even warns you about speed cameras!  :)

And that's another difference I've had to learn out here... the difference between saying I live off of Beverley and I live off of Beverley Road.  My BF had to constantly remind me that Beverley is a town and if I just say Beverley then people will think I am referring to it so I really need to say Beverley Road.  To be honest I find it annoying to have to make that distinction as I would never say I live off the intersection of Bighorn BLVD and Bruceville BLVD.  :)

I know where Beverley Road is.   :)

When we were there the first time visiting my FIL, I loved going to Pearson Pub (and down to the park, too).  We also learned when we were there that hubby's great-great grandfather was from Beverley (raised horses), but was disowned because he married a barmaid.  :o

That is so cool!  I love how small a world this is!  I have never been to Pearson Pub but I go past it all the time.  And the park is lovely.  I love seeing all the dogs just running around and playing.  It always makes me wish I had my Cooper girl with me so she could run and play too... she'd love it!  But I left her at home with her grammy and her aunty and she's getting plenty of love from them.  She's even training for a half marathon with my sister as well!  :D
