I bought two return tickets yesterday from London to Budapest. The Mister and I were going to go for our 3rd anniversary. Well, this morning I found out the airline ceased operating! This only happened today. I've sent a message to Expedia but I have a feeling they're going to tell me to shove it. The airline went bust so I'm sure as hell not going to get a penny back from them. As I paid with a debit card, I thought I was SOL until I read about the Visa chargeback scheme. I'm sending the bank a written request for a chargeback today with a copy of the flight confirmation e-mail from Expedia and keeping my fingers crossed. It was £220 so not the end of the world, but still a lot of other things we could do with that money!

Yes - DH did a chargeback on his visa debit & got money back.  He'd arranged to buy me some extra Wii equipment last July for my birthday present, from an internet seller with 'a really great deal'.  Well they took his money but never sent the merchandise.  They kept saying they'd sent it - and more than once too...meanwhile, lots of feedback was going up about them from others saying they weren't getting their stuff either.

So after 2+ months of ongoing emails & hassle, giving them negative feedback etc...he did the chargeback & got all his money back.  The place still had the cheek to keep telling him they'd sent the stuff & would he please remove his negative feedback - huh, no chance!

I finally got my birthday present (he ordered elsewhere finally) in November!  :P

I'm glad to hear you got your birthday present and your money back. I can't believe this is happening. I only bought the tickets yesterday, if only I'd waited one more day. But I had no idea the airline was even in trouble. It didn't even occur to me, one just assumes a national flag carrier would be okay, at least not on the verge of going bust! As of this morning, Expedia is still selling tickets for that airline...

The same thing happened to us with Sea France. It took a month but we did get our money back from Sea France.

Yup, they told me to shove it.

"Thank you for contacting Expedia.co.uk regarding the refund for the flight reservation.

I would request you to please contact the credit card provider or the travel insurance provider in order to recover the full refund paid for the original Malev flight.

However, you can book for other flights as alternative by calling us. We are available 24 hours on 0330 123 1235 or from outside the UK on +44 2030248211 (usual costs apply).

Your patience and understanding is much appreciated in this matter.

Thank your for using Expedia.co.uk."

I knew that would happen. Oh well, I'm going to send off the chargeback request first thing tomorrow. Hopefully Lloyds will be nice about it... I like how they told me to contact my travel insurance provider. They don't usually cover this sort of thing, anyway, do they? Not that it matters. I hadn't bought a policy yet as I only booked the flights yesterday.

Do either of you have anything other than the classic account with LTSB as all their other accounts incude travel insurance? :)

No, unfortunately. We only opened a classic one because he was a poor student and I was unemployed at the time. But we might upgrade soon. I heard back from Lloyds and they said they were investigating it.
