American student interested in relocating to England
« on: February 20, 2012, 06:47:43 AM »
Hello!!
I'm a 21 year old girl, and am finishing up a BFA in filmmaking. I've been trying to get a internship here in the states, but have not had much success. I recently found out that I have connections to two English based companies (One company is London based. The other is Liverpool based). I have submitted my resume/cover letter to both companies.
Even if I don't get either internship, I'm seriously considering just going England on a travel visa for a few months, with an intention to move there eventually.

I've always been interested in British, particularly English, culture and history. I guess you can call me an anglophile. (That term just makes me squirm. I don't want people to think I'm going to gawk at them because they were born in England. I just genuinely enjoy English TV, and music).

So thats my situation! I'm looking for any advice.
Thank you xx

Welcome to UKY!

Work visas are not easy to obtain. Have you thought about maybe studying in England? A student visa could be the way to go for you.

Again, welcome!

Thank you for the welcome!

I've been researching for a bit and have spoken to the connection that I have. Apparently if they can find a place for me in their company, the visa situation will be taken care of. I was told not to worry about it (not very reassuring!)

Thank you though! I think a student visa could be the way to go!

Well then you have been mis-informed.

You can get an internship through Bunac, but it is not as easy as someone at the company saying yes you can have a job.

They need to be able to prove that no one else in UK or Europe can do the job.  Which, as a recently graduated film student, they just wouldn't be able to do.  There are a lot of unemployed film people here as well.

Have you visited before? Even for a short time?  If not, I would really suggest a visit of at least a few weeks before spending any considerable amount of time and money on a visa of any sort.  English TV and music is not at all indicative of what it is like to live in England.  I can safely say the Rolling Stones and Fawlty Towers plays absolutely no part in my daily life :)

Ahh, I apologize. I think I didn't explain my situation very well! I feel like I'm leaving a bad impression on here : /
If I get one of the internships, they will aid in me in working out a visa situation. The internships will most likely be unpaid. So, this could count for college credit for a master or something to that degree. These are two large companies (I think they maybe classified as corporations), so they frequently deal with situations like this. I'm sorry if this came off in the wrong manner. If they do find a place for me in either company, then  they will walk me through the visa process.

Haha!! Yeah, I don't expect the world to be like Misfits. (That would be absolutely horrifying!)
I went several times in High School. I haven't been since 2008. I have travelled outside of London as well, but have always stayed there. The longest I've stayed was a month. My cousin is there right now on a student visa, and will be there for 6 months. I totally was not trying to be like 'I'm such an expert on this culture', but I was trying to explain why I wanted to go. Sorry if this was taken the wrong way!

Sorry I was a little harsh!  Early mornings, but no bad impression on your part.

People just think it is easy to come over and it used to be much easier.
