Change of address for the IRS - should I wait to file my taxes?
« on: February 22, 2012, 12:40:25 PM »
Hi all,

My family and I moved over here to the Newcastle area in August. Just now got around to looking at taxes and such.

I just now realized I need to file a change of address form with the IRS (Form 8822) which I don't have a problem with (seems pretty straightforward). But in the fine print it says it will take up to 4-6 weeks to process.

I believe that my tax returns have been processed much faster than that in the past, so I don't want to run into the issue of filing a return that gets processed before my address change goes through, and having my any IRS paperwork go to a defunct address (there isn't even a dwelling on that spot anymore).

Should I delay sending my tax filing until the 4-6 weeks has passed? Or is it a non-issue since my refund will be electronically deposited?

Or wait, DO refunds from the IRS get electronically deposited if you only have a UK account?

As we're in tax season and you haven't filed, I would change your address on the 1040. The 8822 would be of more benefit if you had already filed, or if we were well into 2012.

I don't think you can have an IRS refund paid directly into a U.K bank. Something to do with the routing/sort code I believe. My guess is they would send you a check to the new address on file. Hope this helps...
