American comedian moving to the UK
« on: July 21, 2012, 04:31:05 PM »
Hello my name is Laura and I am a stand up comedian from NY, been living in Los Angeles but will be spending the next three months in the UK.  Currently I am in London, preparing a show for the Edinburgh Festival called American Girlfriend.  The show is about how a relationship with a british man, changed my relationship with my country.

I have to admit, I have been secretly using this site for the past year.  I was supposed to be moving here in May, but due to a relationship failure that didn't happen. But I am here now and loving it.

It doesn't escape me that being an American here can be tough sometimes because everyone seems to make me aware of it.  I would like to see, meet, email some friendly American faces.

I will be in Edinburgh for the month of August, so If there are any Americans there I would love for you to come to my show which is Free.

Yaay, the sun is shining today!!!!!

Thank you for reading this, and I look forward to communicating further.
Laura

YO! Hey... I am from NYC, and I do stand-up too.

The scene here is great.

And... I have been doing The Moth for years, and doing the Newyorican story slams, and I have done the E Fest a number of times, but I'm not doing it this year - I'm writing.
I just did an event at Arcola Tent in Dalston for 5 weeks.

You might want to check out Spark London as it is a good place to work on new material WITHOUT being in a room full of "comics working on new material."

I live in London.

Send me a private message on here, and if you want, I will introduce you around a bit... To some local egomaniacs with inferiority complexes... I mean... some local fellow stand-up comics.

L.

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Well I'll tell you, the whole process of immigration should provide plenty of material...

The thing I find a bit difficult in regards to British humour is the difference in cultural minutia. The other day I heard a comic riffing and the 'punch line' was 'Sue Pollard'. Who the heck is Sue Pollard?

I do an excellent Carson impression which I use to shoe-horn in a few other bits....something like, "Wouldn't it be funny if Zap Branigan, Floyd from the Andy Griffith Show, and Carl Ballantine appeared together on the Johnny Carson Show?" But it is totally lost on the British.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Hey!  Do you remember Rich Hall from the 2nd/3rd generation cast of Saturday Night Live? Many yrs. ago he made the jump across, and is a standup comedian in the UK.

Best of luck to you kid!

I love Rich Hall. He was so funny on David Letterman's morning show.  Ruby Wax is an American comedienne who has done very well here. And I think Reginald D Hunter is hysterical.

Don't really know of Ruby but Rich and Reg are great. I think they really get it, living here, which is why their transitions have worked so well for them good luck!

A couple of years ago when we were watching QI and he was on there and DW said "oh, that's what happened to him" - he's great, as is Reginald D Hunter.
Ruby Wax she'd never heard of and DW cringes everytime she's on TV
