another cat question...
« on: March 25, 2012, 10:34:04 PM »
so the last two weeks or so i noticed my cat has not been using the litter box. its not like he has started to use it all over the house. He just haven't went to the restroom much at all!

I do not know if i should be worried or not. He doesn't seem to be sick or anything. I havent changed his food. Everything seems to be well normal just that I havent had to clean his box in ages. I am wondering maybe if he is doing the deed outside now that he staying outside longer. But even when I bring him in at night there is nothing in the litter box the next morning.

If he were going in the house, it's likely you'd have noticed the smell by now!

Can you watch him when he's outside and see if he's going en plein air? I suspect that's what it is - and good for him!

If this were my cat, I would keep him inside for a full day to make sure I could observe the toilet habit.

Male cats in particular are prone to problems, and if he is NOT eliminating what goes in, he could have an intestinal blockage. You don't want to know how bad that could be.

If he is otherwise acting normally, chances are he is 'going' outside, but you need to make sure ASAP.

If it's been two weeks and the cat isn't showing signs of distress, then you can pretty much guarantee it's going outside. Ours stopped using her litter box within days of getting a cat flap, without any prompting at all on our part. Our strawberries look somewhat the worse for wear, but it's a fair trade for the kitchen not smelling of cat!

Okay i will keep him in the house a full day.  while i want to make sure everything is okay i must admit it has been nice not having to clean the litter box and thinking of ways to make it smell fresh lol

keep us posted! I'm sure that he IS going outside, but better safe than sorry.

I noticed the same thing about my cat last spring.  It coincided with me opening the windows and doors in the day time.  Once it's nice enough for him to stay out doors longer, he rarely uses his litter box.  Maybe once a week or so.  Even over night, it stays clean.  Now in the winter or if he has to stay indoors for any length of time, it's back to cleaning out the box quite often.
