All the information about the Life in the UK test can be found here: http://lifeintheuktest.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/

You can take it whenever you like, but honestly, you don't really need to worry about it quite yet if you don't want to.

You have 2 years in which to take it, so it's not something you really have to start thinking about just yet. You just need to have passed the test before you apply for ILR in 2014.

For now, I'd probably just concentrate on moving to the UK and getting settled in first (open a bank account, register with the NHS, get your name on bills etc.) before thinking about things like studying for and taking the Life in the UK test :).

You'll learn a lot about the country and its systems (education, taxation, employment, CAB, etc.) just by living here for a year or more.  It's easier to absorb the information that way than trying to read a book in the abstract.  My experience was that some things in the book can in fact only be understood if you have lived here a while.  You'll still need the book in the future, but if I were in your socks I'd wait.  Besides, aren't they talking about revising the book?

:-\\\\Oh crap, I haven't heard about this. Do you happen to know when? I keep putting off taking the test and really don't want to have to re-buy books for it.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I thought you could take it any time and my thinking was that I'd get it out of the way before I got a job (bit ambitious), but perhaps I'll cool my jets and enjoy the ride for a bit - DH has got a very fun summer planned and how much fun will I be if I'm studying on the beach somewhere!  ;D

Try to relax about it. If you are able to memorise random factoids for a short time, you will have no problems. I agree with the others to wait a bit. Enjoy settling in.  :)
