Visiting the US
« on: April 09, 2012, 03:12:38 AM »
Hi all :)

So I am the one in the US, and DB will be coming to visit me this summer. We just bought his plane tickets.

Now, I did all my research on what to do and what not to do while going through UK border control when I went to visit him in February and... Though I had to deal with an interrogation (scary!), I did it with seemingly no issues...

So now my question is what will customs be like for him coming here? Is he supposed to omit the visiting his girlfriend part? I know the UK frowned on a young American girl traveling alone to visit a boy... But I'm unsure how strict the US is on this when the role is reversed. Any tips on how he can get through border control without any issues? I told him we have a few things better this time around 1. We've met in person, 2. Both of our families are aware and supportive. I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you in advance!

ETA: I think I might have put this in the wrong section... Please let me know if I have! I am learning the ropes here! :)

I think my then boyfriend and I both had to deal with lots of questions every time we visited one another.  It was no different on either side of the border.  I just answered the questions honestly as I had nothing to hide, nor did he (I'm US, he's UK).  Sometimes I felt the questions were pretty invasive but they are just doing their job.  As long as you/he has a return ticket which proves you aren't trying to stay illegally and you/he have sufficient funds for your trip then you should be okay.  I noticed a shift in attitudes after we were married but before I moved over on my visa.  The first time I went to the UK after the wedding by myself the border agent said congrats and asked why I wasn't living in england yet.  It depends on the agent; some are nicer than others but try not to be offended if they seem suspicious - you aren't doing anything wrong!

Yes, I dealt with lots of questions when I went there and the agent was a very, very stern, grouchy man. Hahaha. I was shaking I was so scared.

I have heard horror stories about them sending some people back on their return ticket early because they're too "high risk" or something. I just didn't want him to have to worry about that. Especially since he's planning to stay for awhile this summer. We got him round trip tickets, so he has a return flight. I hope everything is alright.

How long is he staying for?  I would have him carry his full itinerary through customs in case they want proof of the return journey and it might be a good idea to carry proof of sufficient funds for the holiday.  I never carried proof of funds but the longest I stayed in the UK was 3 weeks.  Wouldn't hurt to be prepared!  Other ppl might have experiences with this though.

Definitely don't have him omit this if he is asked. This would be seen as deception. Honesty is definitely the best policy.

The first time then-DB visited me in the US, he was questioned for about 10 minutes and a received a phone call - then he was let through. Hugs and kisses commenced!  :D
