Best way to transfer US $ to UK £?

Hi,
I did search the forum, and I haven't found an answer to my question.
I've immigrated, and the dh and I are looking to consolidate our savings. We have ~4500 USD that we'd like to transfer to our Bank of Scotland account (and no, the USD are not with Bank of America).

What's the best way to transfer this money with the least fees? I've seen commercials for xoom.com. Has anyone used this service? Has anyone tried paypal?

I transfer everything via paypal. For me it's the best option. It's also incredibly easy.
