As a product of US Catholic schools myself I know what you mean about the expensive but perceived to give better quality education thing. I know where I grew up it was believed that because we wore uniforms we somehow had more discipline or something.
Catholic schools here in the UK are just another type of state (aka public in the US) school and as such they are free. Whether they offer a better education is going to depend on the individual schools in the area. Plus as far as I know all schools wear uniforms here.
