Moving companies...opinions please
« on: August 09, 2012, 07:49:16 PM »
Hello

I am moving from Texas to the UK in Nov.  I've gotten 3 quotes so far from Sterling, Ranier and Doris from Premier Worldwide.   I am shipping approx 700 to 1000 cft. with a weight of about 3500 lbshe ur it's actually probably less than that. They are all quoting on a 20 ft container which is about right, but the prices are all about $8000 !   This is of course packing etc, which we have already done most of but they want to see inside all the boxes and possibly repck some if neessary...of course i know this helps with getting thru customs easier..This seems very high to me.  I will not us upackweship and I am going to get some more quotes from international movers here in Dallas too.

Does anyone else feel that these prices are on the high side?  I was anticipating paying more like $5000 ot $6000.  We are taking quite a few boxes but very little furniture.

Any opinions would be greatly appreiated....or any more mover recommendations too !

Thanks

Well, you're going from Texas. We took a 20 foot container from the East coast directly and it was about $6k, so the price difference doesn't seem unrealistic.

I was quoted $7400 by Graebel for a Boston, MA to London move.  They quoted me a 20 foot container as well, but we only had less than 200 cubic feet of items (apparently, they don't do small moves).  Needless to say, we didn't use them, but for your move the quotes you've received don't seem so far fetched.

I also packed most of my items as well and they just opened the boxes to check the content...luckily, they didn't need to repack anything.

I am moving from the east coast to the UK in a week.  My shipping cft is about the same.  Almost all said it would be a 20ft container.  I am packing it all myself and no one mentioned reopening anything.  The quotes were from $6500 to $9300.  The lowest was extremely poor customer service and I doubted the quote as he misquoted to me 4 times before that one.  Two were around $6900 and another was about $7500.  I read good things about the most expensive but since they were sooo high I crossed them off and went with the one left that had the best online reviews and least poor reviews which was one of the $6900 ones.

I would suggest calling as many places as you can find and talking about the process and getting as many quotes as you can before making the decision.  And be prepared for some to get a bit... annoying when you tell them you are going with someone else.  Some like to continuously email you asking why.

If my move goes well I will post who did the move but I would hate to give their name and then find I have problem after problem and have recommended others to them.
