Travelling w/o other parent... letter needed?
« on: May 11, 2012, 10:13:23 PM »
I'll be visiting the US with our Son next week, without my husband.  Do I/should I travel with a letter from my husband giving me 'permission' to travel abroad with our son?  If so, any idea what info should be in it?

Has anyone been asked for this type of letter in their travels?

From the British point of view, as you have legal Parental Responsibility (by virtue of being his mother) there is no requirement to have a letter from your husband.

I always travelled with a letter - I'll send you the one I used.  It was drawn up by a lawyer.  Air Canada always required it.

I have travelled alone with my kids for six years, never needed a letter. I personally wouldn't bother. But thats just me.

I know my friend needed to provide a notarized letter of consent when her ex would take their kids to Canada during the summers.

FYI - I just travelled to the US with my son.  I carried a letter as suggested, and was never asked for it.  Also, I was on my US & UK Passports, but he only had UK one.  Never questioned...

I think the letter is a good idea, and I will be bringing along in the future just in case...

I had to get my ex (the other parent) to sign paper for our children's passports.
At that time, I also had him sign a letter saying he consented to the kids visiting the UK with me, thinking I owuld need it.

We travelled from US to UK through AMS and back again.

It was never needed.

I carried birth certificates, divorce papers and the consent letter in question and only our passports and boarding passes were ever asked for.

I hope that helps.  Good luck!

Canada and Mexico are two countries that are rather stringent on this.  Canada is very tough so I've read, so if your flight has a stopover in Canada or you are flying a Canadian airlines I would prepare a letter.

In the US, it's more of an airline-by-airline basis.  Some airlines don't care.  Some don't care for domestic flights, but do require it for international flights.  You're probably best to check with the airlines that you will be flying.

I should probably also note that if you don't have the same last name as the children you might sort of get them curious.  If it's no bother to prepare a letter I'd do so and just file it away in your stuff along with the copy of your passport and emergency numbers (and all the other things they tell you to prepare for travel that ends up in some tiny pocket of your coat somewhere).

I don't have the same last name as my kids, and its never been a problem nor has anyone questioned it.

I have been traveling between the U.S. and U.K. with my daughter for 6 years now(she is 11).  I always travel with a letter of consent but I have never needed it.  I would as a precaution, but I doubt that you would be asked for one.

Those that carry the letter - is it notarised in some way? If so, how does one go about doing that here? We don't have plans right now, just curious more than anything.

Thanks!
