Hello (:
« on: July 26, 2012, 06:22:20 PM »
Hello everyone, I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I'm doing everything off my phone and its a bit harder. Anyways, I'm Alexzandra, 19 years old and I live in the U.S. but obviously want to move to the UK. ASAP :P I was on the BritishExpats site but was directed here in hopes of finding some help (: Right now I'm staying in Detroit, Michigan and I've graduated High School. Haven't started college yet because I've been working as a housekeeper for a Staffing Company that works with Marriott hotels. I have high hopes of moving to the UK (Soon) and studying there too. I play Soccer for fun & to be competitive ;) Hopefully I'll gain a lot from this site. Seems intresting already. (:

Hi, welcome. I am from the Detroit area! Where are you originally from? I hope you find the information you need here. Although you cannot just up and move to the UK, you could study there as you mentioned. It would allow you to live and work there during the course of your studies.

Up and moving isn't an option for me, but I would if it was remotely possible. I'm originally from here. Born and raised about 5 minutes from downtown in Southwest Detroit. Its all so confusing, I was trying to readup on the process of Dual Citizenship but I only ended up with a head ache. Over the next year I plan on saving as much as possible and hopefully visiting there next year with my bestfriend. Have you ever been to the UK?

Yes, I am in the UK(Oxford area) right now visiting my BF for a few months. I have been visiting every 6 months since I met him 2 years ago when I first went to London with my friend :) I am from Royal Oak, a suburb of Detroit. I used to hang out in the downtown Detroit area a lot before I left for the summer.. I really miss Eastern Market and the bars downtown. I take it you haven't to the UK before then? Where do you plan on visiting? I hope you can save hard and make the trip here. As far as dual citizenship, I believe you must be on a settlement path(family, married to a citizen) or a worker visa to gain citizenship, and it now takes 5 years. If you are interested in studying in the UK, you should start looking into schools and programs and make sure your school is on the sponsor list. You will also need loans and/or proof of finances to pay for your studies and accommodation. I don't know much about the student visa route, but there are many people here on student visas so there is a lot of information.

That's amazing you and your BF are making it work. Best of luck to you two. And hopefully heading straight into London. I wouldn't mind traveling around a bit to a few other places, Newcastle, Doncaster, Wolverhampton, Liverpool? . Hopefully I'll be able to stop in Ireland for a bit too before reaching London. I love traveling and just know the U.S. isn't the place for me. I plan on being a Global Studies Teacher and hopefully have two majors also English. I heard there's a demand for English teachers so who knows. Maybe I'll find someone there who can help me navigate and such. I'm not shy or anything when it comes to asking for information. Just a bit scared when I do get there people will obviously know I'm not from there due to my American accent :b Oh well. Aha.

Good luck with your plans :).

I heard there's a demand for English teachers so who knows.

Unfortunately, there's no demand in the UK for English teachers right now - in fact because of the recession there are too many qualified English teachers for the number of jobs available - and in order to hire a non-EU English teacher, the school would have to prove that they couldn't find a single qualified English teacher in the whole of the UK or any of the other 26 EU countries (that's out of 500 million people)!

Only pure science (Physics, Biology, Chemistry etc.) and math teachers are in demand here at the moment.

There are quite a few Americans in the UK (about a quarter of a million last time I looked it up) and quite a lot of them are in London, so I wouldn't worry too much about the accent (in fact, in Central London, there seem to be a lot more foreign accents around than English ones :P). I have relatives in Arkansas and I feel so out of place with my UK accent, when I visit because there are hardly any English people in Arkansas :P.

Science is not my strong suit. I like Chemistry but its a bit complicated :b I would rather stick to having Global Studies as my Major. The course I took in High school varied in so many different things from World religion, politics, wars, cultures, races, traditions, and the black market. Being in Detroit I have yet to find someone with a British Accent except for one of the guys I work with. Aha (:
