Getting jobs back in USA
« on: November 09, 2011, 10:40:41 PM »
I have a question. My husband and I have American citizenship, we have been living in the UK, but we want to move back to the US.

Obviously the economy is still suffering, but economy in the UK is far from great.

We have been looking for jobs in the Phoenix area, but we are finding it hard to get responses on our applications.

Any ideas or is anyone going through the same thing?

I've just spoken to a prospective employer and she kept asking me for dates of when we will be there. I really just can't give dates because we don't want to move without jobs.

Ideas?

I would have thought if a prospective employer is asking when you will be there, the answer would be "as soon as you can give me a job".  More seriously, though, unless you can pack in your jobs in the UK and move across and afford to look for a job while in Phoenix, you will have to hope that you can perhaps phone or video interview.
I did an interview a little while ago where the employer was willing to use Skype to do a video interview but I'm not sure how many employers will go to those lengths.

Possibly your other bet is to try to setup an interview if you are taking a vacation to Phoenix, maybe if you were over there a couple of weeks an interview could be interviewed during that time?
And the world first spoke to me in Sensurround

What contact details do you have your on CV/resume'? If it is your UK address/phone, that could be putting off employers. Do you have family in Phoenix that you could use for your contact details? My hubby and I both are trying to move back - he is 99.9% certain he's getting a position back with his old company, and I am applying for positions online. I'm using my mother's address for my contact info. There is a company interested in me, and one of the first questions out of the HR person's mouth was when are you moving back. I told her "we don't have a set date to return as yet, as we are awaiting some info on shipping our belongings, but our rough estimate is in 3 to 5 weeks. However I could adjust plans if you needed an earlier start date" That is a realistic time frame for us, but be sure to give them an actual time frame that would work for you. That response was ok with the HR woman, as we have now set up a Skype interview.

I think it's a fair question to ask, because things typically move faster in the US when it comes to people's start dates. They may want a position filled immediately, and they typically do not expect a 1month's notice (2 weeks is more the norm). You need to come up with a response that you think is realistic for your situation and that you think may suit an employer.

Matt, I almost said: "give me a job NOW", but I behaved... I am thinking about going there on holidays, we won't be able to go now until the new year, so I might hold off applying for jobs.

Bluegrass Lass, I told this person Jan/Feb next year, and I guess she got put off by it because like you said, things move quicker in the US and she dismissed me as someone she would consider for that position. If one of us would get a job, that would make it much easier, and we would move as soon as. Obviously we have to take into consideration shipping our things, etc, but we've sold most of our staff already and just have the basics with us.

Thank you both for your replies! It is good to hear what other people are doing or what they think about.

I realize this thread is a bit old, but I'm in the same boat. I want to move home, but am having little to no luck finding a job. What did you end up doing?

When my husband and I have moved in the US, he always had to fly in for job interviews before they would offer him a job.  It they want to know when you will be there, they may want to know when they can interview you.  I wouldn't expect a job offer without an in person interview unless you are in a field where they really need people and don't have many applicants.
