Contact lens checks every 6 months?
« on: August 15, 2012, 03:14:30 PM »
Is it just my optician who does this or is it standard? It seems a little silly as I've been wearing the same brand of contacts for almost 15 years and never had any problems. Seems like once a year should be sufficient but they make me do it to renew my prescription so I have no choice and just seems unnecessary.

My husband has checks every 6 months. Once a year it's the bigger one, with the eye pressure test and everything, the other one is just to make sure he's on the same prescription.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012
FINALLY A CITIZEN! 29/2/2012

Your prescription is valid for 12 months so, if you are paying the optician for 6 monthly checks you are being scammed.

I pay £20 a month for my contacts and it also covers my vision exams and the contact lens checks. If I were paying extra for it, I would definitely find a new optician.

I vote silly. I get my eyes checked every time I run out of a 12 month supply of lenses, so I suppose that's every 14-18 months.

Unfortunately, it's now required. I think it falls under EU guidelines. Very annoying.

Grr, yes it is. I'm very fortunate that my optician is a 5 minute walk down the road from my flat but I'm only able to make Saturday appointments because I work and I'm usually way too lazy to go out on weekends!

I have eye issues so I go every 12 months for the big exam, pressures, field of vision, etc- and contacts once a year as well.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

You're stuck with me!

I just had my eyes tested in the UK, bought 12 months supply of lenses and my (lovely, thorough, conscientious) optician waved me off with a "see you in 12 months".

Perhaps I escape the 6 month checkup because I live in Asia at present and visit the optician when on vacation in the UK?
