omg i got into Glasgow too
« on: August 25, 2012, 12:53:00 AM »
OMG I am freaking out a bit. lol Although I am a lot calmer compared to two days ago. I found out Wednesday that I got into the Uni of Glasgow for PHD in public health.... well now i have a choice to make. Loughborough for sports science or Glasgow for Public Health. I have given myself one week to make the choice.

My whole life I have been in sports health but maybe it is time for me to expand a bit into a similar bu different aspect of my field. Because the studies are different I kinda feel like this is more than choosing a school... i feel like whichever i choose will be starting me on my career...(if that makes sense)

anyway..both school are great... and both school staff has been wonderful when i talked to them. this choice will not be easy at all. It just a good thing that I had not submitted my paperwork back to loughborough yet and i have time to think about all this and make a sound decision

Hm, Do you have enough saved up to go and visit each place for a few days?  Have you been to either yet?

I've always found that getting a feel for a place is always the best in helping me make my decisions. Sure, you've spoken to them, but can you "see" yourself living in either place?  3 years is a long time to live somewhere, especially if you're unhappy.

You can logically weigh the options/make a pro's & con's list, but what is your heart saying?

I definitely understand what you mean by starting on your career, as doing a PhD is the highest level of education you can obtain--and you'd be considered an expert in that field.  So, I guess something to consider in that respect is-- does one option keep open more doors for you?

For example--In choosing my undergrad major, I was having trouble deciding between Exercise&Sport Science, Nutrition, Biology, Chemistry, Psychology(Neuroscience).  I ended up picking Biochemistry, because I could still quite easily switch into a career in plain old Chemistry / Nutrition/ ESS/ Neuroscience.  My first two jobs out of college were in biology.  The second was perfect. I worked with chemicals to see how they affected receptors in the brain--so it combined the chemistry, cell biology, and neuro sides of things.

Would you be able to do your thesis for Public Health in something that still allowed interaction with the Sport Science side of things??, or a thesis in Sport Science that tied in well with Public Health?  I think combining the two would help prevent you from feeling like you're abandoning sports health, and help you make the right choice :)

Sorry I'm not more help, but it's ultimately your decision.  Best of luck!

No I do not have enough saved up to visit both schools before I decide. Although I never been to either schools I have at least been to Glasgow before and spent loads of time in villages and town near the city.

Moving to city sight unseen is nothing new for me though lol I basically did that with my Masters degree.

I think I am leaning towards Public Health in Glasgow. I love sports medicine don't get me wrong but Public Health does as you say "open more doors" and I am beginning to think it will enhance all the sports education I have had until this point and make me more rounded in my field.

But for some reason I get a little antsy when thinking of Glasgow lol  This whole thing is making me antsy in general. It is starting to hit me that I will be gone from everything I know for at least 3 years.

Just and update after about two weeks of going back and forth I have decided to go to Glasgow. It just makes more sense logical. In public health their is more job opportunities and also more opportunites for grants.

I am happy and excited and I am just ready to start this new phase.

But let me tell you it was a HARD choice. I must have went back and forth gazillion times

Good luck! My mom is a Family Nurse Practitioner and works in a public health clinic. She LOVES her job. She was a NICU RN for 40+ years, too. I think public health is a good field to get into these days. Also, Glasgow rocks (except it's cold in winter. And sometimes in summer.)

Congrats! I loved going to Glasgow Uni, and I love Glasgow, and I wish I could go back!  :)
