In what sense?  It's basically not useful at all - your US driver's license must accompany it, so it's not necessary.

I actually did get an international license years ago but yes, supposedly I was to have my US license with it plus if I was serving a manual, I was told I should have taken my US test in a manual car. So now that I am looking to return to the UK, I will just eventually work towards my UK license...it will probably help for ID purposes as well

As geeta said, your US license has to accompany it, and you can only drive on your US license for a year after you move to the UK. So it would be useful for a year but after that you would need to get a UK license.

I've started the process of getting a UK license, I don't think that it is as bad as it seems!
2006: Met DH to be in London
2006-2010: LDR, with one year spent in UK in post-grad school
2010: Moved to London on Tier 1 PSW visa
2011: Engaged
2012: Married
2014: ILR Approved at PEO Croydon
2015: I'm finally British!

How far along in the process are you? I'm waiting to get my provisional in the mail and I'm terrified of what happens after that, hah.

Unless you are a totally new, inexperienced driver, it's no big deal. If you have ONLY driven automatics, you have a bit more to learn, but so what? It's a skill that stays with you forever.

Take a few driving lessons; the objective is to teach you how to pass the test, not how to drive. Your auto insurance premium will typically drop after you get a full UK license, and yes, this is also a useful ID.

Did you stress so much in the US when you got your learners permit? And then you license? Probably not - adopt the same attitude, and you'll be fine.

DH's older grandson (English born and bred) failed the written test on the first try, but he was far too 'smart' to bother reading the book. The younger one passed written and practical first time.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

The only reason to get an international license is if you're going to a country that doesn't really recognize your license. You'd have the exact same problem after one year. You can only drive on a non-EU license for one year. Since your US license is recognized during that year, an international one is nothing but a waste of money.

Solstince, I just passed my theory test and my father-in-law is giving me a few lessons to start out with. Study study study for the theory test! I bought the DLA computer software and that was extremely helpful!
