favorite internet radio stations?
« on: May 27, 2012, 05:40:55 PM »
There's hundreds and it's hard to know what to listen to at times. What internet radio stations do you listen to, what do they play, and what are the upsides/downsides?

Some of our favs are:

Big Blue Swing: excellent play list that mixes neoswing with the older book, some blues, but rarely western swing. Upside: no feedin when you turn it on. Downside: if you listen a lot, then the rotations become familiar.

WWOZ: New Orleans' radio station. (ok, Treme got me onto this, but great quirky selection). Downside: since it is a local station, when they do the musicwire of the night's gigs, it can go on forever. V. annoying when you can't go to any of them. :(

FIP. A French station with an eclectic mix. Not really world music, but cosmopolitan. Upside. just enough French spoken to remind you that it's not an Anglo station.

Antenne Bayern Chill Out. Balearic chill-out, close your eyes and think of the Blue Bar on Formentera.

Biggest disappointment. Why, why, oh way? did CBC Jazz stop broadcasting outside of the country? Every decent jazz station we find bellies up (aka thejazz) after a year or so.

I listen to Mix106 from Boise Idaho my hometown.......they play all the modern songs from artists like lady gaga, katy perry, maroon 5, jason derulo, etc etc.  I usually only listen during their morning show from 5am to 10am mountain time....10am to 5pm local time because I love Mike and Kate the dj's and have met them in person.......the only downside is it makes me very homesick sometimes.........but it is nice to listen to something familiar sometimes......take care!!!!

Thanks for the tips tinathellama! I don't use my laptop much anymore since we succumbed to the iPad and iPhone, but when I do, I'm going to check those out. Now I'm thinking about starting a similar thread for smart phone radio stations... not happy with what I've got so far (Pandora), but I haven't spent any real time looking.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Hi,

download Tunein, it's a free app and turns the ipad into an internet radio receiver (and also has an easier interface to select music by genre).

I'm a smooth-jazz fan, and like the following stations:
Eva 95.5 (Phoenix, via iHeartRadio)
KHJZ-HD2 (Houston)

I'm a big Prog Rock fan, and listen a lot to Stellar Attraction prog rock radio. Delicious Agony is also pretty good for this style of music, although for me it plays more from the heavier sub-genres (I'm more into the symphonic, psychedelic and neo-prog genres than Prog Metal).

KCRW is the NPR station in Los Angeles.  In addition to regular NPR programming, they play a great mix of music, from dance to progressive, indie, jazz, etc.

They also have Today's Top Tune, which is a free song download M-F, great way to build up your music collection.

WMMR Philadelphia, reminds DW of home and reminds me of visiting here. We always stream this when we have our July 4th BBQ. Even got a request played last year.
