Ipod touch 5 cheaper on the apple US store?
« on: October 16, 2012, 05:27:03 PM »
Has anyone else noticed this? With the exchange rate, it's cheaper than the UK apple store. Is it possible to order it from apple store US or amazon US and get it sent over to the UK? Will it be even more expensive because of custom duties and various shipping charges?

Very frustrating that people in the US not only get it cheaper but they can also buy a cool '4g sleeve' for $99 and it lets them use 4g on it 1gb/month for free. Wish we had that in the UK!

Yeah I did price comparison for the iPad. It's waaaayyyy cheaper in the US, so I'm buying one here to bring over. Anyway you could get someone to send or bring it over for you instead of ordering directly? If I weren't leaving already on Saturday, I'd say ship it to me and I'll bring it. But there's not enough time.

Ooh, interesting thread - I've literally just today decided I might like to get an ipod Touch and I've been looking at UK prices for it.

I didn't think about how it might be cheaper to buy it in the US... just looking on the US Apply website, it looks like the 64 GB version in the US is the same price as the 32 GB version in the UK!

I wonder if I can get one shipped to my aunt's house in the US and have her send it to me...

Random question: does anyone know if you can zoom the camera on it when recording video? My phone doesn't have a zoom feature and that's why I was thinking of either getting a new phone or similar which did have a zoom.

It's enough time if she doesn't want the newest version. Amazon will ship it so it could arrive as soon as Thursday. Also, I got an email advertisement from Amazon this morning saying that the 8 GB older version is on sale today for $160. If you live in a state where Amazon doesn't charge sales tax, that's free of tax as well.

And Gibby, remember that the UK prices include VAT already--the US prices are exclusive of sales tax and that will vary depending on the state. So something to keep in mind as far as the price difference.

Oh yeah I totally forgot about sales tax. Thanks for pointing that out!

Amazon doesn't charge sales tax to ship to a lot of states, though, so that's a way to get around it. Probably not worth having it shipped, though, only makes sense if someone is coming over and can bring it into the country with them. By the time you pay for shipping and duty, it won't be much cheaper.

You're right. Sucks because I won't be going back there until summer time. I got so excited when they advertised it lol.

Hi
As per above, if you ship a US purchased iPod or indeed, any other product to a relative/friend in the US and in turn have them ship it here, you'll be liable for the shipping, import duty, VAT and customs clearance fees. Even with that all added, it'll probably still be £20-40 cheaper than purchasing here. The best way is to have someone/or yourself bring the product with them/you when travelling to the UK :)

As an aside, the US enjoys cheaper pricing on 'exactly' the same product compared to the UK as it's the worlds biggest market. The manufacturing industries also operate in US dollars which helps things too. There's plenty of manufacturers of products and distributors who will laugh when asked if they will sell/send to the UK as they don't consider such a small marketplace worth their while to bother with! Thus, the UK has more limited choice of products and higher prices overall.

I import and export on a frequent basis and hopefully soon, at a much increased level so I have to keep tabs on these sorts of things!

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!
