Outta sorts, but doing ok
« on: October 08, 2012, 04:56:24 PM »
Hey. I'm from Arkansas & am sorting out life in Guildford.  It's a little weird as I'm not working yet & I don't know anyone, but my boyfriend is a great support. Would love to have a glass of whine with someone who has traveled this path ahead of me :/

Welcome to UK Yankee!  I'm not anywhere near Guildford - but hopefully someone who is will be along & maybe y'all can sort a coffee or something out.  :)

Welcome to the board. :) I wish I could help you but I have yet to make the move. How are you liking Guildford? I've never been but it's one of the places we have been investigating. How long have you been there?
9/11/2012 Husband mailed his US citizenship application.

10/12/12 Hubby went for finger printing.
10/26/12 Dh got a letter stating when he should appear for his interview and test- 11/27/12- just a month away!!!
11/27/12 We went to dh's interview and test- he passed and we went back 4 hours later for the Oath Ceremony! 95 people from 38 countries, really pretty cool!
So he's now a US citizen!!

My in laws live in Guildford and Godalming. It is very pretty there.
β€œIt was when I realised I had a new nationality: I was in exile. I am an adulterous resident: when I am in one city, I am dreaming of the other. I am an exile; citizen of the country of longing.” ― Suketu Mehta.

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Hi there.  I live in Camberley (about 15 mi from Guildford) and am very familiar with the area.  I've been here over three years now. Let me know if you have any questions.  I'd be happy to help.

You may want to stick with wine rather than whine... its a bit more uplifting :)

Thanks ladies.  I am enjoying Guildford very much; I love being able to walk to so many places...& I feel safe. I've been to Godalming & sampled some of Granny's Pantry's goodies.  Yes, whine isn't as positive as I should be.  I have nothing to whine about, but it does tend to happen when wine is poured  ;)  Really, all is good, but like many have said...it is an adjustment (a little more than I expected).  I'm lucky to be staying close to High St., so it's fun to wander & people watch.  I've been here for about a month.  Dipped into a yoga class & that was fun. Still looking for a good local website that keeps me posted on local goings ons & gossip....the kind of stuff you'd hear about at the water coolers at work.  When I can work again, I think I'll feel a little more like myself.  Again, thanks for the hellos.

I don't know if this is allowed on the board or not, but I think http://www.citysocialising.com/home.html is pretty interesting and maybe they have one closer to where you are.

I think it's important to give yourself a good amount of adjusting time.
Maybe your boyfriend could keep his ear/eye out for any potential happenings going on. Also maybe check cafes and whatnot to see if there is anything posted that might be of interest.
This looks like it has some interesting things to do. http://www.totallyguildford.co.uk/

There is a Facebook page for girls who meet up in Guildford. I've never been to their get-togethers, but it may be a good way to meet some people.  You can just do a search on Facebook and should be able to find it.

One thing that I dislike about Guildford is the number of Americans there, but if you are specifically looking for other Americans to speak to, it will work in your favour.  I can almost guarantee that if you go to any Starbucks or Costa in Guildford, you'll hear American voices within 30 minutes.  Or go straight to the source and visit the Stateside Candy Company at White Lion Walk and there will be plenty of fellow Americans to strike up conversations with.

This made me giggle because I can completely relate!
