Watching US video in the UK
« on: September 23, 2012, 09:54:55 PM »
Can any one recommend a free proxy for watching HBOgo and Netflix here in the UK. All the ones I have found so far have not been fast enough for streaming.

I can't recommend a free proxy, we tried those but decided to pay for service as it is much faster.

But, if you google search for many of the programs you want to watch you will find them available without using a proxy, and your only constraint will be the speed of your own internet service.

I was using TunnelBear for a while in both the UK and the US. It's not free, but it's only $5 a month and it worked beautifully.

^^ This ^^
And if you want to test it out, you can get up to a gig and half free just by tweeting them (you get 500mb and then a free gig for the tweet)

Its really simple to use as well, so if someone in your house isnt very techy they can easily figure it out

I am another that uses TunnelBear. I find its well worth the small amount of money for the unlimited streaming..
Tried others but so far this has been the best for me.

I use Overplay. They have a great DNS blocking thing as well as the proxies you can connect to.

FYI - you can use your US netflix account in the UK. Or at least you could as of a couple months ago. The downer is that you only get the UK content, which is not as extensive as the US.

I use Hotspot Shield, too, from Anchor Free (http://www.anchorfree.com/). I've not tried HBO on it, though, but Netflix, Hulu and all the basic and basic cable network sites I've tried work on it. I did have trouble with it in our old place, where the broadband just wasn't fast enough, but it works fine where we are now.

You still can. I use my Netflix account daily. I never switched it over from my US account, because I have so much history on it, and like its recommendations based on my thousands of reviews, and they apparently can't maintain that history while changing your country of payment. Or at least, they couldn't back in May when I tried. It's not much bother to send the $9 over to my US account each month, so I just do it that way. And if I want to stream something that's only available in the US, I just use the Hotspot Shield, and it works wonderfully. :)

My netflix account states the following:

Watching Instantly Is Not Currently Available For Your Account
Unfortunately your account is restricted to streaming only within the 50 United States and its territories.
You may still access your account, but you will not be able to play any title.

This must have just changed.  Crazy!  I can't get tunnelbear to work for some reason.

How odd. I just used my overplay account to access the UK netflix site and had no problems (I'm in the US). Have you tried just accessing your account on netflix.co.uk without Tunnel Bear? Sure you won't have your queue, but until you can sort out a reliable VPN service you can still use your account there.

Anyone know of a proxy that also works on Android?
I am missing my American TV shows in Canada (lol) and I would like to use Hulu on both my laptop and tablet.
What is the difference between Hulu and Hulu Plus?
